When I was pregnant with Gabby in 2009, my cousins threw us the cutest pink and brown birdie baby shower. It was the first "crafty" party in our family and the start of many more themed events. It was no easy fete considering we had a guest count of over 100 people!

This time around, my cousins truly outdid themselves with a buttons and bowties theme for our baby boy. Everything from the invitations, food signs, water bottles to the place settings, party favors were all handmade.

It was such a wonderful afternoon surrounded by amazing friends and family. Our little growing family is definitely blessed.

Invitations: The invitation had a blue felt bowtie attached to the top and placed inside a hand-sewn fabric shirt pocket sleeve. It was designed to resemble a man's button down shirt.

First of all, I wanted to thank all the readers who have been emailing me about my various blog posts. I love receiving feedback and it's encouraging to know someone out there finds my posts helpful. Even though I haven't updated the blog in awhile, I definitely read all my emails and try to respond to them as soon as I can.

With a very active 3.5 year old girl and a little boy coming in a few days, I'll definitely have my hands full again. What's a post without pictures so here's one from several months ago. Our little guy sure is flexible!

Since it's summer, it could be even be a fun way to bring drinks over to a friend's house for a backyard bbq.

Supplies Needed:

* 24 Pack of Beer or Soda
* Cardboard
* 2 Spools of Ribbon
* Scissors, box cutters or exacto knife
* Hot Glue Gun

Here is how I separated the layers:

* Top Tier - 3 cans
* Middle Tier - 7 cans (6 around, 1 in the center)
* Bottom Tier - 14 cans (10 around, 3 to 4 in the center)

First, arrange the cans into the three layers on a table to see how big you would need to make the cardboard circles. To make round circles, you can use various sized plates or bowls to trace the circles. Cut out the circles using an exacto knife, box cutters or a strong pair of scissors. You can use any cardboard you have laying around the house. I just used an old Pampers box for cardboard - nothing fancy.

Next, line the cans on each layer of cardboard so you know where you want everything to go. Then, doing one can at a time, take one can out and quickly hot glue the bottom of the can to the cardboard. You have to be fast or else the glue may dry out especially if you use cold cans.

To put the layers together, glue the tops of the cans and place the layer on top. Don't worry about glue being on top of the cans because the glue peels off easily. Wrap ribbon around each layer tightly and hot glue the ribbon. Put a ribbon on top and voila, you're done. I topped mine off with a small sign glued to a stick.

Overall, it's an inexpensive yet thoughtful gift that he'll get a kick out of. It's fairly fast to make and you may already have all the supplies in your house - just add the beer!

Somewhere between laundry, storytime, park dates, dinner and birthday parties, my blog has fallen through the cracks. I do want to start catching up before fall and winter is here again though. I have posts and projects piling up waiting to be shared. This will be on my summer bucket list.

Anyways, Gabby's at such an interesting age right now. Yes, she's in the midst of her Terrible Twos and heading towards her Thunderous Threes but also so much fun. She's talking a ton and saying the funniest things. It's incredible seeing how her mind works and how she views the world. I need to stop thinking she's still a helpless baby and face the fact that she's two going on thirteen.

I better stop here for today and figure out what to make for dinner. I'll leave you with a few Instagram photos in the meantime.
Hopefully this will help you too.

* Lego Font - this is a free font. I just googled "Lego Font" and picked a site that was easy to download. I got the one I used here.

* DIY Lego Birthday Banner

I printed the letters in Lego font with a yellow border on cardstock paper. I carefully hand cut out each letter and mounted it on red and black cardstock. I figure I would save on ink this way and the banner ended up nice and sturdy too.

The red cardstock is 5.25 inches square and the black cardstock is 5.5 inches square. I punched out holes in the top corner using a Fiskars rectangle hand punch.

Click here to download the free printable banner.

* Lego Kit Kat Box Favor - I don't have a printable up right now but could make one for you. I would have to customize it with a name, birthday and include the Lego Mini-Figure of your choosing. Email me at bigklittleg at gmail dot com. For mine, I listed my brother's name, his birthday in the Lego serial number format (example: February 23rd was "0223") and picked the Lego Surgeon Mini-figure. I may just do a generic one that you could update yourself so please check back later on for that.

If you have any questions about these or anything else, feel free to email or comment. :)Big Khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06585065636757862765noreply@blogger.com50tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-229699119962694564.post-61470456059389727382012-03-18T13:56:00.001-07:002016-04-17T22:56:50.912-07:00Surprise Lego PartyWhat do you get a person who can buy anything for himself and does? After many texts and emails back and forth, my brother's girlfriend and I decided to throw my brother a surprise birthday party. He's a big kid at heart and is an avid Lego collector so we thought he would get a kick out of a Lego themed party. Who says themed parties are only for kids?

My brother was definitely surprised we put this all together for him. He had come over the night before and we had nothing out that made him think something was going on. The morning of the party, we hustled to get everything ready in time. I'm lucky to come from a large extended family so got a lot of help preparing and setting up. My cousins came over early and helped bake cupcakes from scratch. My mom and aunts made some of the side dishes and prepped the fruit plate. My cousin Q helped make the food signs that very morning. It was a whole family effort.
My brother has so many Lego sets that he left some at our place. We used these as part of the dessert table display:

Lego Carousel (retired set)

Lego Ferris Wheel (retired set)

Lego Mini Modular

I made my brother a personalized birthday card from Tinyprints with pictures of Gabby and him together over the years. He absolutely adores Gabby. I could probably say that he may have more pictures with Gabby than I do. We wanted to give him an annual pass to Legoland but didn't want to actually buy it too early in case he doesn't have time to go right away. So my husband designed this 4x6 gift certificate and we placed it inside the card. We incorporated the Lego surgeon mini-figure since it is his profession. When he opened his card, he thought this was a real certificate from Legoland.

I laid out and labeled 25 Lego pieces on a board. Everyone had a few minutes to memorize as many pieces as they could and whoever could jot down as many as they remember wins. I even had a hard time remembering all 25 pieces and I made the game!

The winners of the games received a party favor bag filled with mini M&M's or peanut M&M's along with a Lego mini figure from this Lego Birthday Party Pack. I also gave a bag to some of the people who helped with the party as a thank you.

I purchased a set of 13 gift bags in primary colors from Michaels for $3.60 ($5.99 plus 40% off coupon). Using this free Lego font, I printed and punched out 2" circles and affixed them to the bag using pop dots to make the bags look like Lego bricks.
I also wanted to do a little something for everyone to take home so transformed Kit Kats into a micro Lego box. I used red double-sided tape to place square Lego Bricks all around my Martha Stewart cake stand. You could try regular Scotch double-sided tape but it may not be as strong and tacky as the craft double sided red tape. That stuff is amazing and easy to remove from the cake stand.
I was lucky enough to come across jumbo marshmallows so used those as the base of the Lego head. I cut large marshmallows cut into thirds for the nub on top of the head and they stuck on easily. The Wilton Candy Melts were the perfect shade of yellow for Lego heads. The candy melts taste like vanilla flavored chocolate and melted quickly and are so easy to use. At first I bought Wilton Edible Food Write Pens, but they didn't work on candy melts. I was able to draw on one Lego head and that was it. Frustrated, I bought this AmeriColor Gourmet Food Writer Pen from Amazon and they worked well. It felt like writing with a Sharpie - dark and smooth.
This was a fun and fairly easy party to put together since there are so many things you can do with Legos. You can even narrow it down and do Lego Star Wars, Lego Superheroes, Lego Pirates of the Caribbean, etc. The possibilities are endless.Big Khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06585065636757862765noreply@blogger.com74tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-229699119962694564.post-84157019334493364872012-03-07T18:48:00.000-08:002012-03-07T18:48:04.945-08:00Gabby's Butterfly Birthday Party Featured on OhdeedohBack in November I shared Gabby's second birthday party pictures here. Someone suggested that I submit the photos to Ohdeedoh/Apartment Therapy so I thought it would be fun to try. I never heard back from them but suddenly got an email out of the blue that it would be posted. It's kind of exciting that Gabby's party was deemed somewhat worth sharing. :)
This would also explain the sudden surge of emails asking for more detailed help on this specific party. I will try to email back as soon as I can.
We didn't have a shoe box to use so ended up using an USPS box. It is larger than what we need but I had to make due.

First, I cut a hole into the box wide enough for Gabby to reach in and grab her cards out. Then, I wrapped the box in plain hot pink wrapping paper. After the box was wrapped, I gently cut a slit into the wrapping paper and folded the wrapping paper over the edges of the hole. This way, the mailbox opening has a nice clean edge.
I wanted to make cards for Gabby to pass out but didn't have much time. I looked around online for free printables and just found something that worked with what I wanted. Kit Kats fit inside these perfectly. I just rolled up some tape and stuck one Kit Kat inside each card. I used a heart punch to make holes to tie a red ribbon through.
At the Valentine's Day party, we read Snuggle Puppy, sang songs, passed out Valentine's, had a snack and made this simple craft.

Supplies Needed:
* Regular school glue
* Small bottle of pink acrylic paint
* Thick white cardstock cut into a heart
* Foam brush
* Candy Hearts

Mix some pink acrylic paint in with the glue. Let your child "paint" the glue onto the heart-shaped paper and decorate it with candy hearts. Lay flat to dry. Make sure you have a decent coat of glue or else the candy will fall off.
If it doesn't rain, we are going to another party at the park on Valentine's Day. We'll have food, let the kids play and do a few crafts. One of the activities we're planning to do is having the kids decorate cards to give to the senior citizen home. Now I just have to figure out what goodie to bring. Any ideas?
Every morning she comes downstairs and says, "Hi, House!" At night before bed, she says, "Goodnight, House!" It's her little hiding place where she throws tea parties for her stuffed animals. As small as this house looks, my husband, Gabby and me can actually all fit in this house just fine. Sometimes she'll even hold us as a prisoner inside and not let us leave.
There is a little mail slot built into the house so we would stick random paper and junk mail through it for fun. I thought it would be cute to have something Gabby wouldn't crumple so easily and that she could reuse. Since Valentine's Day is next week, I figure it'll double as a Valentine for her as well.

I was excited to go shopping for baby shower gifts last month because it meant looking at newborn clothes. It's been awhile and it makes me nostalgic. There is something just so sweet about those tiny little baby socks.

I ended up picking out staples like everyday onesies, baby socks and washcloths as opposed to going out clothes. As cute as those little girl dresses and little boy cargo pants are, I know they won't get much use. In the first few months, Gabby went through so many onesies even in a single day. You really can't have enough.

If you have a Carter's store near you, consider yourself lucky. They have the best deals and coupons that you can use on top of it all. I rarely buy anything without having at least a 20% off everything coupon in hand. The main reason I love Carter's is that there is no time limit on returns so I was free to hoard baby clothes up to a year in advance and return if not needed. I would venture out to say that Gabby's first year wardrobe consisted of over 80% Carter's.

A pack of Carter's baby socks comes with three pairs of socks and a pack of washcloths comes with six. The combination was perfect to make these delectable yet calorie free cupcakes and lollipops.

I picked up a package of three plain white Wilton Cupcake Boxes from Michael's (about $3-$4 after 50% off coupon). You could opt to get boxes with designs or in different colors, but I just kept it simple.
Since a cupcake box only fits four, I was able to make two lollipops with the extra socks and washcloths. The technique is the same as the cupcakes except you fold the washcloths more to make it thinner. Place in a square plastic bag and secure with a rubber band tightly to help hold its shape. Insert a lollipop stick into the rubber band and tie it with a ribbon.
It's a simple and sweet gift that is also practical and useful. Even to this day, Gabby still uses her washcloths. I ended up not using the onesies as part of the "sweet" gift and just wrapped them inside a gift bag. Next time I'll have to figure out a way to turn the onesies into something else - maybe a cake or ice cream sundae.

I dug through our box of wedding stuff and found stacks of wedding cards. We had over 200 guests and tons of out of town guests who sent cards. I think I'll save that project for another time.

I found our RSVP cards that I have been saving for the day I figure out what to do with them. We had asked guests to write some wishes or words of wisdom on the back of the cards. We received quite a few creative and funny ones. Some people drew pictures, glued on photos or wrote quotes. One even attached a saying from a fortune cookie. I'm really happy we still have these mementos from our wedding.

The difference between this book and the birthday card book is that this one has a hard cover and I didn't need to sew the spine together.

Pictures of the materials used and more details on the process can be found under this post.
I cut and glued a decorative paper sheet to each board, leaving a small gap for the book tape. I accidentally cut the pink book tape a little short so patched it. I used a thin strip of cardboard from a notepad I had to use as the spine. Leave a quarter inch gap between the spine cardboard piece and front/back cover so that you can close the book.
It breaks up the day and she gets a chance to play with other kids. Our city hosted a one hour Superhero party for kids ages 2 to 5 so I thought it would be something fun Gabby would enjoy. For $10, the kids drew, painted, danced, played a few games, went on a parade and had a snack.

There aren't too many Superhero costumes for girls so I put together one for Gabby. It ended up being more cost effective than if I just bought costume from the store. I was lucky and found a Superhero t-shirt on clearance at Old Navy to pair up with Gabby's tutu from her Halloween costume. All she needed was a superhero cape, which was fairly fast and inexpensive to make.

DIY Toddler Girl's Superhero Cape and Costume Tutorial:

* Old Navy Tshirt (about $4-5 on clearance)

* Tutu (recycled from Gabby's Halloween costume)
* One half yard of yellow felt (about $1.50 - It was $3/yard after 50% off coupon from Joann's)
* One inch square piece of stick on velcro
* Optional: One 9.5 sheet of purple felt (on sale for $0.20/sheet)
* Optional: One 9.5 sheet of purple felt (on sale for $0.20/sheet)
* Optional: Purple floss or thread
* Newspaper to use as a template pattern

Step 1: Using a sheet of newspaper folded in half, loosely draw an outline of the top of the cape. I just eyeballed how big I thought Gabby was. Once cut, I used the newspaper to put it around Gabby's shoulders and adjusted the size as needed.

Step 2: Use the newspaper as a template to cut the yellow piece of felt. Adjust the length as needed. I made Gabby's a little on the longer side so she can use in dress up play as she gets older.

Step 3 (Optional Superhero Badge): There is an "S" on Gabby's t-shirt so I went with that for the badge on her cape. Find an image of an "S" online, print it out about 7" long and carefully cut out an outline. Using the backside of the felt piece, flip the image over and trace an outline of the "S" directly on the felt piece. This way, when you cut out the felt piece, you don't have to worry about the pen marks since it is on the back.

Step 4 (Optional Superhero Badge): Once the "S" is cut, sew it on a yellow piece of felt the same shape. I suppose you could iron it on as well but I am not familiar with using iron ons and figure I would mess it up. Besides, I thought the thread gives the badge a nice embossed look. I added another layer of dark purple felt underneath to make the badge stand out on the bright yellow.

Step 5: Add an one inch square piece of velcro to the straps of the cape and you're good to go. It's super simple and you have an instant Superhero.

Overall, Gabby and I had a great time. It is so bittersweet seeing her grow up and participate in big girl events. She is definitely not a baby anymore. Once she goes off to school, I know I will be crying more than she will.
Bake about 15-18 minutes but check starting at 13 minutes. It took exactly 17 minutes in my oven. Frozen dough requires an extra 1-2 minutes to bake.
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica neue" , sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 19px;">
I'm going to try to get all my Holiday-related posts done before Christmas. We still have a few people to buy for but the hard part is figuring out what to get. I might end up baking some cookies or something. Our family always celebrate on Christmas Eve so that cuts down on my remaining shopping time.

Anyways, I wanted to share all the salt-dough ornaments Gabby and I made last week in case there is anyone that wanted to do some last minute gifts for their family.

DIY Salt Dough Handprint Ornament (Heart with Gabby's Thumbprint):

Supplies Needed:

4 cups of flour

1 cup of salt

1.5 cups of water

Rolling pin

Cookie cutters

Coffee straw or skewer to make the holes for the ornament.

Acrylic paint

Optional: rubber stamps

Note: This recipe makes a LOT of dough so you may want to cut the recipe down. I was greedy and used every last piece of dough so we made 50-60 various sized ornaments. It took a long time to roll them all out especially with a curious toddler helping.

Step 1: Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and knead for approximately 10 to 15 minutes until thoroughly combined. This is what ours looked like mid-kneading. Not very pretty at all.

Salt Dough Mixture:

Step 2: Scoop out a handful and roll out the dough. Shape into a circle or use cookie cutters to make whatever shape you want. Press down handprint and make a hole or two for the hanger using a straw or skewer. I used a straw and the hole came out clean. I used rubber stamps to imprint letters, numbers and shapes.

Step 3: Line up ornaments on parchment paper on a cookie sheet and bake at 300 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until golden. I think I slightly undercooked them because they started getting puffy if I baked them too long.

Step 4: Let air on cookie rack for about a day. You could just leave them on the cookie sheet but flip them back and forth so the back dries too.

Step 4: Paint with acrylic paint. You can add glue and glitter if you would like. Hang with a string or ribbon. I painted them using acrylic paint.

Disclaimer: Sorry the next several pictures turned out so poorly. I usually take my pictures during the day in natural lighting but ran out of time so took these at night with bad lighting. Gabby hung the ornaments on the tree so I don't want to pull them down to take the pictures again. At least you get an idea of what they look like.

I tried to get fancy and painted on a clear acrylic coating to make them shiny but they dried with this thick cloudy film. Next time, I will try using an acrylic spray paint instead for a thinner and more even coat. I got tired and painted the mitten pretty poorly. Gabby's handprint is on it so I'm keeping it. Maybe I will repaint it later.

As you can see, my painting skills really leave something to be desired. You can really tell they are "Do It Yourself" but I am glad we did it. Gabby had a lot of fun helping me. It was a long and messy endeavor but well worth it for the memories.

White Chocolate Covered Oreo Truffle Pops:

Supplies Needed:

1 package Oreos (I use the regular non-double stuffed kind. You can get creative and use Mint Oreos as well).

1 8 oz. package cream cheese softened (I use Philadelphia Cream Cheese).

Almond bark, chocolate bark or candy melts (see previous post for the CandiQuik brand I use).

Optional: Food processor or Magic Bullet.

Optional: sprinkles, nuts or other toppings of your choice.

Step 1: Leave cream cheese out to soften. Finely crush Oreos (filling and cookie together) in food processor or Magic Bullet and place in a medium bowl. Another option is to place the Oreos in a large Ziploc bag and finely crush them with a rolling pin or smash them with something heavy. Make sure all the chunks are gone.

Step 2: Add in the cream cheese and thoroughly combine with the Oreos using your hands. I usually put on plastic gloves but that is optional. The resulting batter should look shiny with no white spots from the cream cheese.

Step 3: Form one inch balls and place on parchment paper. Let freeze for about 20 to 30 minutes.

Step 4: Melt chocolate as directed on the package. Take 2-3 Oreo balls out of the freezer at a time to dip. If you take out too many, they will start to soften. Add sprinkles or other toppings quickly or else the chocolate will harden fairly quickly. Leave on parchment paper to harden.

Make sure you store these in the refrigerator because the cream cheese could spoil.

Variation (Oreo Pops): You could get fancy and put them on popsicle sticks. To do this, you just need to add one step. After you form the ball, dip a stick in chocolate and insert it into the ball. Place them in the freezer with the sticks already in them. This will help the stick adhere to the pop or else the ball will fall off. Here are the ones I made for Gabby's birthday:

Variation (Oreo Kisses): Instead of balls, you could also shape them into them into Kisses. These would be fun to do for Valentine's Day. I made these for our friends' engagement party last May. I added a little strip of paper with various sayings and wrapped them in Wilton Foil Candy Wrappers.

If you are skilled you can shape Oreo Truffle Pops into reindeer, snowmen, Santas, etc. I'm not very artistic so will stick with simple sprinkles or chocolate drizzles.

I'm excited to see what kind of cookies will be exchanged so we can sample and test out new recipes. I knew I wouldn't have time this morning so after Gabby went to bed last night, I made a small batch of Oreo Truffles and these fast and simple cookies that turned out soft and a little bit on the sweet side.
Supplies Needed:

Any boxed cake mix. These are Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe Devil's Food Cake Mix.

Two Eggs

1/3 Cup Vegetable Oil

Optional: Any flavor Hershey Kiss or Hug (mint, caramel, etc). These are Hershey's Candy Cane Christmas Kisses.

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 and line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.

Step 2: Add eggs and oil to cake mix batter and stir well.

Step 3: Use a large spoon to scoop batter onto cookie sheets and bake for approximately 8-9 minutes.

Step 4 (Optional): While cookies are still hot out of the oven, add one Hershey Kiss on top and smoosh around with the back of a spoon. Once cookies are completely cool, place in the refrigerator for a few minutes to let the chocolate harden.

These are handy when you don't have a lot of time or enough ingredients on hand to make chocolate chip cookies or anything too fancy. You may even have a box of cake mix laying around in your cupboard.

Here are ones made with no toppings. The Pillsbury Moist Supreme Strawberry Cake Mix is super sweet so I would not recommend adding anything else on them. These are staying at home with me. :)

It will take you less than 15 minutes total and will be sure to be a hit.

Sweet and Salty Caramel Turtles:

Here is what you need:

A bag of Rolos (found at Target, Walmart or any supermarket). A 12 oz bag contained about 57 pieces.

A bag of Snyder's Butter Snaps (you could use mini pretzels as well but the butter snaps have more surface area)

Any Topping(s) of your choice. I did cashew nuts, almonds, pistachios and Holiday M&M's.

Parchment paper (I use the Reynold's brand because they were on sale for $2.50/roll at the supermarket)

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Line parchment paper on two cookie sheets.

Step 2: Unwrap the Rolos and place them on the Butter Snaps. Unwrapping the individual Rolos will take the longest in this whole process.

Synder's Butter Snaps & Bag of Rolos:

Unwrapped Rolos on Butter Snaps Lined Up and Ready for Baking:

Step 3: Place the cookie tray in the oven for 3-4 minutes until the chocolate starts looking "wet". Try not to overcook or else the chocolate will start burning. I did 3 minutes in my oven and it turned out fine.

Step 4: Place a topping on top of the Rolo and push it down. Be careful not to touch the chocolate with your finger.

Finished Sweet and Salty Caramel Turtles:

Step 5: Let it cool. If you are in a rush to leave, you can place them in the refrigerator or freezer. Just remember to serve them at room temperature or else you will be eating hard cold caramel.

That's it. You're done! You can place them in individual mini cupcake cups or just toss them in a box like I did.

Finished Sweet and Salty Caramel Turtles. I placed them in parchment paper over a sheet of green tissue for a festive look.

There's only so many times you can go to Target or the mall play area. The park is only so much fun by yourself too. So I recently joined a local Mom's group so Gabby can have playdates with other children around our area. She really enjoys being around other kids and I get to have some adult interaction and conversation too. So far, it's been so much fun! There are several events every week so there's always something to do if we wanted. We've done playdates at a gymnastics studio (for free), the park, a craft day at a fellow mom's house with about 15 other kids.

Tonight I'm going to a kid-free Mom's Night Out and White Elephant Secret Santa Exchange which should be fun! We are going to craft some gift tags and munch on home-made goodies. With Gabby's help this morning, we made about 20 of these babies.

Almond Bark, Baker's Chocolate or Candy Melts. I used about half a package of almond bark for twenty pretzel rods (see picture below).

Parchment Paper

Optional: sprinkles, chopped up nuts or candy, crushed Oreos or whatever you want. This time I didn't add any nuts just in case some people have peanut allergies.

Step 1: Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper. On a large plate, break off and melt two portions of the almond bark in the microwave in 30 second increments. You don't want to overheat the chocolate.

Step 2: Roll a pretzel rod on the melted chocolate until it has a thin coating. If you add too much chocolate, it may drip and make your pretzel have a flat bottom instead of a round shape. Cover approximately 2/3rds of the pretzel rod length-wise.

Step 3: Add on your toppings and let cool on the parchment paper. You can also melt a different color chocolate and drizzle it on for a different look. By the time I was covering the pretzel rods and topping them, the first pretzels had hardened and were ready to be bagged for freshness.

Step 4: Place finished pretzel rods in plastic bags or airtight container. The hardest part on this whole project is opening up the plastic bags! You can spice up the packaging by adding ribbon or labels if you wish. So many choices and super easy too.

I figure I could always use extra random buttons for crafting projects but really, the little plastic buckets were too cute to resist. They come with a snap on lid and ribbon hanger already attached. I took out the buttons and filled them with random Legos and made an instant DIY Lego ornament for the Christmas tree. Perfect for your fellow Lego enthusiast and collector like my brother.
I picked up a couple of more in blue and white from Walmart also for $1.
I think I may fill the new ones with a mini figure - maybe a snowboarder, mad scientist or doctor? There are so many cute Lego mini figures. Here's a cute stocking stuffer if you have a police officer friend or family member:
I spent the last three to four days covered in felt pieces and random thread tidbits. I blame it all on Pinterest. I started out wanting to make Gabby this simple felt Christmas tree that she could play with. Seemed easy enough. Then, I came across this post and had to try it. After many late nights being poked by needles, here is what I came up with. It's a week late for a Christmas advent calendar but Gabby is none the wiser.
Felt is such an easy medium to work with. You can cut it into virtually anything you want. It helps to have a sharp pair of scissors though. I can't seem to find the ones I used but it's made by J.A. Henckels. Here's something similar but mine are a little longer.

The above picture was taken yesterday on the 7th. I miscalculated and ended up making 25 spots on the tree and 25 ornaments but made only 24 pockets. I didn't realize there were two different sides to felt and used the wrong side of the red felt so it's pilling up in some spots. As for the numbers, I looked at using stickers, iron ons, and even paint. I ended up finding a tub of adhesive foam letters on sale for 40% off (about $3-4) at Michael's. The foam letters stuck on the felt just fine but I dabbed on a little hot glue for a stronger hold and it worked like a charm.

The pockets are 3"x3" so I made the ornaments around 2". Sometimes it was a little tricky working the little details but you just need to have patience and good lighting. I'm glad I got a chance to use up some of the felt sheets I stocked up on last month when it was on sale.
At the age of two, Gabby doesn't really understand what Christmas is let alone the idea of counting down the days until Christmas. All she knows is that Santa is nice and not scary, trees decorated with lights and ornaments is "Christmas" and gingerbread man cookies are good. I have to put the calendar away each morning or else Brobee will end up under the table or Santa will be lost between the couch. My goal is to keep this intact and last until she goes off to college at least. I bet I'll have to replace missing ornaments along the way but it will give me an excuse to make some more.Big Khttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06585065636757862765noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-229699119962694564.post-56127131759473465182011-12-02T15:26:00.000-08:002011-12-14T11:04:13.131-08:00Sponsor Highlight: My Buddles
I'm excited to introduce our newest sponsor, Jennifer from My Buddles. Right after Labor Day, we get a twinge of excitement for the upcoming holidays. We took over all the cooking from our moms years ago so that we can do a traditional American style feast as opposed to an Asian one. I'm not a cook at all but can do a juicy turkey. What I love about Thanksgiving is that the focus is on the food and family. No stress about buying and wrapping presents.

I prepared a bunch of turkey heads in advance wearing pilgrim and feather headbands. Before dinner, parents helped trace and cut out handprints to glue on a headband. It was a fun little activity while dinner is being setup.
The rules are simple.

No picking yourself.

No picking an immediate family member or spouse (meaning I can't pick my brother or husband).

Stick to the minimum.

Write a list of 5 items you would like.

Keep who you drew quiet until after all the gifts are opened.

We usually just write our names on a slip of paper or print out so I wanted to try something a little different this year. I searched all around for ideas on how to do the drawing but couldn't find a thing. I wanted something that was credit card-sized so that you could carry the list around with you in your wallet when you are out shopping. I also wanted something where you could hide the name from prying eyes as the names are drawn. This is what my cousin Q and I came up with.

As you can see by the number of tags, we have a BIG family that is constantly growing. Imagine having to buy for each cousin, niece and nephew. We would all go broke. Now I have to think of five items for my wishlist. I know I'll be tempted to list items for Gabby but she'll have her own tag this year. Hmm... any ideas for around $25?
